Grease/Water Separator
Sapulpa, OK
Project Scope
Install a flexible membrane liner in a concrete pit that is designed to separate grease from waste water at a large glass manufacturing facility.
Challenge
Having been in use for years, the pit’s concrete was saturated with oil and grease. Due to this, an applied coating would not adhere properly. Furthermore, being located in an area subject to earthquakes, there were concerns about the integrity of the pit in the event of an earthquake. There were also doubts about the ability of a coating to bridge cracks that might occur in the concrete
Solution
The pit was emptied and steam cleaned to make it suitable for entry and installation of a flexible membrane liner. Geo-synthetic padding was fastened to the bottom and sidewalls of the pit. The padding helps to prevent any sharp areas of the pit or loose debris from puncturing the liner. Witt Lining Systems fabricated a membrane liner in two pieces. With the two pieces positioned into place, the liner was field welded together by factory installers.
Results
Installation of the padding and liner was completed over 2 days. Upon completion, the pit was returned to service. The finished liner is expected to provide years of worry-free service in the separator pit.
