Leaking Tank at Major Utility Company
Project Scope
Prolong the service life of a leaking tank for a utility company.
Challenge
At a remote location, a process water tank for a major utility company was leaking approximately 10,000 gallons of water per week. Environmental concerns required immediate action to be taken. Between extreme cold weather and a very limited down time, an applied coating was ruled unfeasible. A fast and cost effective solution for making the tank liquid tight was needed.
Solution
A flexible membrane liner from Witt Lining Systems was selected as the perfect solution. The liner was made in two sections and folded to easily fit through the manway. Because the liner was secured to the top of the tank versus glued or bonded to the tank, no extensive sand blasting or prep work was necessary. This greatly reduced the tank’s down time over using an applied coating or bonded lining. Daily high temperatures were ranging from 8o F to 30o F, but since Witt liners are not bonded to the tank and do not need to cure, only enough heat to keep the liner at 70o F inside the tank during installation was needed. Since no cure time is required, as soon as the liner was installed and in place it was ready to be put back into service, again saving down time for the customer.
Results
Despite the cold weather and snow, the entire installation was completed in under four days. The process tank was returned back into immediate service with no further reported leaks
